How this Essex care home keeps residents upbeat during COVID-19
The staff at our Essex learning disability care home, Mandalay, have been coming up with creative solutions to ensure the residents remain happy and upbeat whilst staying safe during COVID-19.
Understanding that it is a difficult time for the ladies who live at Mandalay , the team have worked hard to make sure the home is full of laughter and fun with different activities. Some of these activities include themed parties, garden exercise classes and crafts. The spacious property has its own garden and relaxing communal spaces, such as a sensory room, which means it offers lockdown activities in any weather.
Magdalena Stankiewicz, who has been the service manager of Mandalay since the beginning of 2020, commented:
“My team really care about the ladies we support and have been committed to still having fun each day.
“One of the most popular activities have been our themed parties. Because our ladies are huge Disney fans, the favourite theme has been the princess party where one of the team made an outfit for each person. We danced to our favourite songs and ate themed treats. Our next party will be inspired by the 80s and the whole house is looking forward to it!”
Unfortunately, COVID-19 has disrupted the many community activities, which Mandalay attend each week…but they’ve found creative solutions! Magdalena comments:
“Normally we love to go to the local swimming pool to keep healthy, so we’ve also been encouraging everybody to stay fit and active by creating personalised fitness plans and a weekly outdoor exercise class. The ladies have also been enjoying the warm weather with our outdoor trampoline, paddling pool and growing our own vegetables, strawberries and flowers in our garden.
“It’s really lovely to see our ladies feeling relaxed and comfortable whilst enjoying themselves. It just goes to show that as long as you remain positive, you can still remain happy.”
