Coronavirus drives Hollie’s savings towards independence!

COVID-19 has been a tough time for everybody across the world, with lockdown preventing many from seeing their loved ones, cancelling celebrations and having an impact on mental health. Because of this, it’s important to look for positives where we can, and Hollie’s story helps to remind us to always see the silver lining.

As a tenant at one of our supported living services, Hollie has been gaining her independence over the last few years and feels that being able to drive would be the next step in her journey. With lockdown preventing Hollie from going out and about as she usually does, it has helped her save a large amount towards driving lessons.

Hollie tells us in her own words, “While I miss going out and spending my money, the lockdown has actually helped me to save towards my goal of learning to drive.

“Before this pandemic, I wouldn’t keep track of my money and spent it very quickly. These last three months have changed my mindset because if I have to stay in, then I want to make sure something good comes from it.”

Determined to achieve her goals

With this strong determination, Hollie has been able to save a substantial amount for driving lessons and theory test. Her dream is to learn to drive and have her very own mobility car.

Hollie comments, “I’ve just been accepted at a local college for Health and Social Care because I want to help others in life. I’m really excited to start my course, but I don’t want to rely on other people to drive me about – I want to drive myself! So, I’m determined to pass my test before I start, and I’m already achieving 83% on my practice tests.”

Kerri Beasley, the Branch Manager for the supported living service where Hollie lives, is thrilled with her development. She said, “The Hollie of today is a fantastic young lady who has overcome many obstacles in her life. When she first came to the service 2.5 years ago, she wouldn’t leave the house. We’ve helped to grow her confidence and now she attends college, works as a waitress and volunteers for a local charity.

“This has been an unsettling time for us all, so I’m extremely glad that something positive can come out this. It’s a good reminder to look for the good in any situation!”
