Neils completes his rehab journey!

Meet Neils!

Neils is a person we support at our brain injury rehabilitation care home, Rossendale Road. In February 2021, Neils’ life changed instantly when he suffered a brain injury. He was admitted to hospital where he received vital medical treatment. After being in hospital for around a year, Neils and his medical team agreed that he was ready for discharge but would need ongoing rehabilitation, so the search began for a provider that could support Neils after his discharge. Although he was happy with the care he had received from his team at the hospital, Neils felt like his life was on hold and was worried about his future. He had goals and ambitions and knew he needed to find a support provider that would help him accomplish them. That’s when Neils found Voyage Care.

Neils joins Rossendale Road

Neils was introduced to his new support team at Rossendale Road in May 2022. He found the initial change difficult and, as he transitioned to his new home, he became shy and very anxious. His dedicated team worked with him to navigate the change as comfortably as possible, treating him with dignity and respect and encouraging him to come out of his shell. They also supported Neils in setting goals and planning his future – something they had identified as being very important to him.

By creating both short-term and long-term plans, Neils’ team helped him find new purpose and direction. This was extremely beneficial to his progress and contributed him to achieving goals quickly and exceeding expectations!

Building a bright future

The team at Rossendale Road supported Neils in building skills and gaining more confidence and independence. Through positive risk taking, they encouraged him to do things for himself and embrace any mistakes he made, using them as learning opportunities. Neils was encouraged to not give up and recognise his strengths and abilities, whilst embracing the areas he needed extra support in.

"I have a fantastic team with a friendly approach, treating me with respect and allowing me to be myself" - Neils, resident at Rossendale Road

They also helped Neils to access opportunities in the local community, which was instrumental in helping him to make his own decisions and plan a more structured way of life.

Neils expressed his desire to become more independent and he had a big passion for cooking! His team helped him develop his skills and confidence in the kitchen, allowing him to start cooking for himself and embracing his love of world cuisine!

Working with a wider network of professionals was important in Neils’ progress. By using a multi-disciplinary team, they were able to deliver support in the necessary areas and ensure he had the tools he needed to achieve his ambition of living more independently.

They also supported Neils in learning to walk again. He quickly progressed to using the stairs without support, which gave him a big confidence boost. An amazing achievement for Neils!

Moving on from Rossendale Road

Neils’ life has changed significantly. When he came to Voyage Care, his main aspiration was to gain more independence and a more structured life. Neils has now accomplished all the goals he set with his support team. He completed his rehabilitation pathway in less than a year and he’s now living in his own home again!

Neils has a fantastic support network. His friends and family have been involved in his rehabilitation since Neils started his journey with Voyage care. They now dedicate their spare time to supporting him in his daily routine and have recently started raising money for him to purchase an electric wheelchair!

Neils’ future became clearer with every goal he achieved. His biggest motivation for reaching his goals was his daughter. With the progress he has made, he’s now confident in being an active part of her life again.

Neils is now enjoying his life as he continues to flourish and smashes every goal he sets!

"Having my daughter in my life makes me so happy. I'm so grateful to have the ability to be her dad again and be part of her life" - Neils, resident at Rossendale Road
