Ruth’s career progression from nurse to manager

Why Voyage Care?

I started my journey with Voyage Care over 24 years ago now and it was purely by accident I came across this company, although I did have colleagues who worked here and spoke about it enthusiastically. I had been qualified for a couple of years and to come and work in the community was very different to the hospital.

As a relatively newly qualified nurse, I took the opportunity to gain confidence and grow as a nurse. I was able to research many different conditions and each day to me became a learning experience.

How did you find your first few months?

I was totally supported as a new nurse, I had colleagues at hand and the manager who helped to develop me and take me through Preceptorship. I very quickly, was asked to take on a role of Deputy Manager, which was daunting but exciting at the same time.

I spent several years as a Deputy, not because I wasn’t offered Managerial positions, but I wanted to value the time and learn as much as I could along the way.

During the time as a Deputy, the company often asked me to act up or take the lead on different situation which proved to be valuable experiences until the day I became Manager.

Do you feel Voyage Care have given you the opportunity for career progression?

I have always been very supported by voyage, they support you with your learning and training to ensure you meet Revalidation, they pay our NMC fee’s and you are given lots of opportunity for new challenges and to gain further knowledge  and experience.

As a manager I was really interested in working closely with the University’s so that we got student nurses, not only because it gave them the opportunity to work alongside us in the community but also we so could keep our skills up to date by learning from them. In my experience the nurses are really valued and it’s a fantastic place to work.

What now?

I now work as a Service Optimisation Manager covering the UK and the experience as a nurse has put me in a good position to do this role. I am able to work and promote all of the good work that Voyage Care provide making a difference to people’s lives.

I have certainly been recognised since taking up my role and Voyage Care invested in me to be able to achieve this, I was the first service to achieve the Investors in People Award, I won the managers award, I took the service to achieve the Best Service for Outstanding Business in the Black Country, I achieved the British Care Awards and lastly I have won the Sade Award which is acknowledgment for Sustained Performance and Living the Voyage Care Dream.

We have a range of brilliant career opportunities accross the UK.
