Barry moves back into the community
Before Barry’s referral, he had been living in institutional care from a very young age due to his perceived uncontrollable behaviour. Because of this Barry had never been given the opportunity to live in the community and had only ever been recognised as a ‘patient’ through an institutionalised system, where his behaviour was controlled with a variety of medications.
Over time Barry’s outbursts lessened and he was assessed for community living. From this Barry was able relocate to the community to live with full support. Barry had very little verbal communication and he used a lot of gestures and expressions to communicate.
To work on Barry’s emotional and communication needs, Barry was referred to Voyage Care’s Behavioural Analyst team and local Speech and Language Team. It was noted that Barry previously required one to one support in most aspects of his life. The staff at Voyage Care recognised that his vocabulary and understanding was extensive and his words could be easily interpreted. With the support from Voyage Care, Barry was able to control his own behaviour and emotions and he is now able to verbally express his feelings and be understood more effectively.
Barry has now been living in the community for 5 years now and his verbal communication has dramatically improved. With the help of the support staff at Voyage Care he now has the confidence and ability to make choices and control his own life. Barry has now been able to build a relationship with his family, which had been lost through his years of living in institutions, and now he meets with them on a regular basis.
